Since the 1990s, more than 60 countries have liberalized laws for sexual and reproductive health and rights. Several have even expanded abortion rights, including Ireland, Mexico and Thailand. Only three countries — El Salvador, Nicaragua and Poland — have created new restrictions on abortion. Now, the U.S. is part of that short list.

PAI is committed to fighting these regressive trends, but we need your partnership every step of the way.

Foreign NGOs are not even allowed to advocate for expanding abortion access when the Global Gag Rule is active. While this policy is not currently in effect, it has not yet been permanently banned and could easily be reinstated by future presidential administrations. PAI is working to permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule and protect the global health space, even as the U.S. moves backward on abortion access.

The Global Gag Rule is a policy dating back to the Reagan administration that, when in place, forbids foreign NGOs from receiving U.S. aid if they so much as mention abortion. And while it’s not currently in effect, the Global Gag Rule has not yet been permanently repealed and could easily be reinstated by a future president. It’s an overreach of our domestic abortion battles in the global health space. PAI remains dedicated to repealing this policy permanently, especially as the U.S. moves backward on abortion access.

Thanks to our community of supporters, PAI was able to support the on-the-ground efforts of partner organizations as they secured wins for sexual and reproductive health and rights across the globe. No matter how far backward U.S. policies may go, PAI and our 120 partners across 36 countries will keep working to ensure global sexual and reproductive health and rights move forward.
