Support The Global HER Act to Repeal The Global Gag Rule
In January 2017, one of the Trump-Pence administration’s first actions in office was to impose a vastly expanded Global Gag Rule requiring foreign nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to choose between receiving U.S. global health assistance and providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care. This policy cuts off funding and supplies to some of the most trusted and experienced health care providers, interferes in health care providers’ relationships with their clients and stifles advocacy efforts—endangering the health and lives of women and girls.
The expanded policy is having devastating consequences for communities around the world. PAI has been at the forefront of documenting these harmful effects. Already, we know the policy has:
- Caused a key provider in Senegal to shutter programs due to funding losses. The provider will now reach 20 percent fewer clients for family planning; provide at least 30 percent fewer cervical cancer screenings; and offer nearly 30 percent fewer treatments for sexually transmitted infections.
- Caused a trusted provider in Uganda to end a program for 6,000 adolescents seeking protection against unwanted pregnancy.
